Bordered by Tibet in the North and India in the South, Nepal is a land-locked, sparsely populated country. Though known for their bravery the world over, Nepalese are a very gentle, peace loving and hospitable people. Culturally, lower Nepal is closer to India, while upper Nepal or mountainous part is closer to highland Tibetan culture. Overall, Nepal presents a very interesting mix of culture, natural beauty and amazing wildlife.

It contains 8 of the world’s 10 highest peaks, including the Mount Everest. There are national parks home to varied wildlife, vibrant cities filled with art and culture and simple villages preserving an ancient way of life. Many different ethnic groups co-exist here with their own distinct social identities and cultural patterns.

Some of the important destinations in this country include:

For several hundred years, Kathmandu was one of Nepal’s three rival royal cities, along with Bhaktapur and Patan. Situated in close proximity to each other, today these three almost run together. Temples and monuments of varying shapes, sizes, styles, and faiths can be found in this capital city.

Chitwan National Park is home to rhinos, royal Bengal tigers, leopards, sloth bears, gaur (buffalo), deer, and many other critters. Freshwater Gangetic dolphins and crocodiles are also occasionally spotted.

Being the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha, this is a pilgrimage town and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Maya Devi Temple here, dedicated to Buddha’s mother, is believed to be the spot where Buddha was born. It contains an ancient stone relief from the 2nd century AD depicting Buddha’s birth.
